Lydia Burris is an emerging artist in Indianapolis, Indiana, Recently awarded a Stutz Residency Grant for 2009/2010! In 2005, she received her Masters of Fine Art from the Norwich School of Art and Design, Norwich England. Prior to her MFA, she received her BA from Indiana University Bloomington with a double major: Fine Arts and “Illustration of Mythology,” a study through the Independent Major Program. During her undergraduate studies in Bloomington, she was involved with various creative publications and organizations. She participated in group shows at the university, displaying work at the IU Sofa Gallery, The IU Fine Art Library Gallery, The Monroe County Library, and the The Textillery Gallery at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. She was also involved in an independent mural project at the Collins Dormitory with 2 other people. In 2002 she received the “Drawing and Painting Award” for outstanding achievement at the School of Fine Art – Indiana University. During her time at school, she also participated in the 2001 Columbus Indiana Art Walk, and showed in two group shows at the Art Columbus Gallery. After her undergraduate studies, she continued to be involved in the arts while teaching classes at the Art Columbus Community Art Center. During this time she was commissioned to paint a 4 foot by 8 foot portrait of an important character from Columbus Indiana’s history, funded by the River Rats organization, and part of the permanent collection in the Columbus Indiana City Hall. In September 2004, Lydia left the United States to win her Masters of Art, Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art and Design, Norwich England. The program was a one year, all year intensive study. During her stay, she visited Cambridge, Oxford and London. She also traveled outside the UK to visit art museums in Germany and Finland. During her studies in England, she exhibited in two art installations for school shows, showed paintings at a street show exhibiting local artists, and performed in an event called “Provopolis” – Performances, Screenings, Music and Happenings in Norwich. She left England in November of 2005, but returned during the summer of 2006 and acquired an art table at a local art, craft and awareness fair. In the year following her MAFA studies, Lydia lived in Columbus again, being involved in various art activities and shows. She traveled the states visiting Florida, Washington D.C., and California. Lydia exhibited a solo show at both the Tutto Bene Gallery in Bloomington In. and The Columbus Center for Visual Communications at the Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. In the summer of 2007, Lydia moved to Indianapolis to pursue her art career. She also started attending Fantasy and Comic Conventions as an artist and illustrator. She exhibited at “Wizard World Chicago” in 2007 and 2008, “Con on the Cob” in Ohio 2007, Mid Ohio Con in 2007, “Oconocon” in Wisconsin - 2008, and Indianapolis’s own “GenCON” in 2008. Lydia has also shown in Indianapolis Galleries: Dean Johnson Gallery, Broadripple Art and Design, Big Car Gallery, Cadaverous Muse Studios, Harrison Art Center , Wheeler Arts Center, Gnosis Store and Gallery and The Bridge Collective at Studio One. Lydia also showed at the Stillframes gallery in Columbus, Indiana. She has also participated in events such as “Art vs. Art” (2007, 2008) and “Masterpiece in a Day” (2008). In 2008 Lydia was awarded a National Society of Arts and Letters Christ Merit Award. One of her pieces was picked as one of five works of art to represent the Indypendent Art organization in 2008. She was also one of the artists involved in a WFYI program called Dreamtime Television. Lydia has been published in magazines (Pan Pogan, Pentagram, Zahir), online publications (Dark Recesses, Strange Horizons), and various books. Her most recent illustrations were for a Role Playing Book called “Winterweir” published by Arbor Productions. Lydia currently working as an artist and illustrator in Indianapolis, and she hopes to continue her pursuit of involvement in all aspects of art. |
